As part of the measures to improve the security situation in the state, Akwa Ibom State government has taken steps to equip Uyo capital city with CCTV Cameras for security surveillance.

To this end, the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ibom Smart City Project for the provision of Wi-Fi connectivity across the state.

Dr. Nse Essien, the state Commissioner for Science and Technology, who made the disclosure in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, said the intention of the administration was to ensure a fully digitalised and technologically advanced state.

He said the state has also signed another MoU with BroadBased communication for the laying of Optic Fibre Cable to service homes and promote Internet connectivity across the state.

Still on digitalisation, the state government, according to the Science and Technology boss, has also been able to mid-wife the construction of a factory for the manufacturing of Hi-Tech solar components at Itam Industrial Estate by Hangzhou Mc2 Prudent Company Limited.

To empower the younger generation of Akwa Ibom people to handle these digital advancements in the state, Essien said the state government has trained 3000 youths on digital marketing, 200  on Oracle and 100 on web design.

He said, “So far, we have been able to train over 3,000 youths on Digital Marketing. The second phase of that training has commenced online, and some youths of the state have been certified by Google/Mind-the-Gap (partners of the programme). The state has also trained over 200 youths on Oracle; and all the participants were given laptops.

“Akwa Ibom State government through the Ministry of Science and Technology has also trained some of our unemployed youths on Micro Works to enable them source for jobs. In partnership with Hotel Booking Nigeria (hotels.ng), the state also trained 100 youths on web design, where the best 50 participants were given automatic employment in private companies.”

 The Associate Professor said that to further lay a digitalised foundation on Akwa Ibom children, the state government has began an installation of 10 modern, well-equipped, Internet ready computer  laboratories, complete with power supply in 10 schools, one in each of the 10 federal constituencies of the state.

For the 30 communities discovered to have been off the national grid in rural communities across Akwa Ibom, Essien said the ministry in partnership GVE Projects Limited, has commenced the construction of Solar Farms to supply uninterrupted power to such areas, starting with Akpabom community in Onna LGA.

He assured that the ministry was equipped with a standard Research and Development laboratory to handle diverse technological and environmental issues in the state. The laboratory has, according to him, been conferred a Green Label Award by Environmental Society, as best managed government laboratory in the country.
